The day I hoped would never come has arrived.  My beloved cousin Crystal finally succumbed to the cancer. She fought a long and difficult battle. She fought hard. The whole time she was fighting she thought of us. I think she may have been fighting more for us than for herself.  I always felt like she nurtured us more than we nurtured her.  Up until the bitter end, she thought about us.  I was told that at Crystal’s request three people were using their cell phones and dialing friends and family so she could say her goodbyes. I received my phone call at about 4:30 last Thursday afternoon. She told me that she loved me and asked me to take care of her children.  She also called my mom, dad, brother and several other family members to say her goodbyes.

She passed away Thursday, April 23 at about 11:15 pm Colorado time. As much as we rushed to get the first flight out, we did not make it to see her before she let go.  Crystal passed in the same manner that she lived her life…It was not long or drawn out, absolutely no drama with grace and dignity.     .

I know you all only know Crystal through me.  I feel all of you understood what an amazing mother, wife, cousin and friend she was. I am so lucky to be connected through our wonderful hobby of scrapbooking to thousands of women who “just understand”. There are no words to thank you for all of the scrapbook pages that you donated.  We didn’t even put a dent in the scrapbook pages.  I honestly thought we would have a lot more time before Crystal left us.  I guarantee you that they will all be put to good use with pictures that I have and pictures that are still yet to be taken.  Your generous hearts will always live on through Crystal’s Scrapbooks.

I thank you all for the thoughts and prayers and graciously ask that you continue to pray for my family as we make our way through this difficult time.

I leave you with this beautiful poem that was forwarded to me by one of our Design Team Members Susan Bugelli.

God saw you getting tired,
And a cure was not to be.
So He put his arms around you,
and whispered, “Come to Me.”

With tearful eyes we
watched you suffer,
And saw you fall away
Although we couldn’t bear to lose you,
We could not ask you to stay.

A golden heart stopped beating,
Hard working hands laid to rest,
God broke our hearts to prove to us,
that He only takes the best.

Our friend Mellisa N. stopped by today and played. She had to use that brand new Marrakech line from Basic Grey. Here is what she came up with!

So cool!

If you watched the news over the last few days, you probably heard about the Christmas Eve tragedy in Covina. A man dressed as Santa Claus went to his ex wife’s parent’s home and shot several members of the family and set the home on fire. When it was over, nine family members lost their lives and the family home burned to the ground. Our friends, Christina, James and Veronica lost both of their parents, their grandparents, an uncle, three aunts and a cousin.  In all, 13 children lost one or both of their parents.  There are no words that can describe how horrific and sad this is.

We are power in numbers. There are two things we can do for this family:

1. Pray, Pray, Pray. Please add the Ortega Family to your prayer lists and/or prayer groups.

2.These children have to arrange and pay for nine funerals.  We will be taking a collection for a gift to help the Ortega Family.  Please open your hearts and help this family out. If we each donate a few dollars we can give a substantial gift to help this family. If you are interested in donating, please stop by the store or give us a call.  Checks can be made out to James Ortega.

Thank you!!

Mmmmm, Mmmmm Good?? We had such a yummy dinner at the Quickutz Club End of the Year party. Many of you wanted a business card and they forgot to bring them. I promised you I would put it on the blog, so here it is!!! Zendejas Restaurant 909-466-0633. {Trish}

Hi Girls,

My cousin Crystal has been diagnosed with terminal cervical cancer.  Here is the email that her husband wrote to friends and family:

Dear Family and Friends:

As you may or may not know Crystal was diagnosed with an aggressive rare type of Cancer located in and around the Cervix.  Unfortunately, since Crystal is HPV negative and completed annual Pap tests the problem wasn’t diagnosed until it reached stage 3.5 – 4 with the primary tumor growing to a length of 9 cm.  We will continue to explore all options, but this is a fast moving disease that is not curative.  This is difficult to say and it may sound like we are giving up, but that is not the case.  We are going to fight this disease and expect good things to happen.

Radiation and Chemotherapy will start on November 24th t and we are confident that new combinations of therapy and or surgery (not to mention the support of the entire Kaiser Oncology staff) will reduce the size and slow the growth so Crystal can enjoy time with Rylee, Aiden, Gaven, family, and friends.

No one knows for sure, but we were told to expect a couple of years depending on how she reacts to the upcoming 6-8 week treatment.  After that she must balance future treatments and quality of life.  With a little luck, your support, and prayers we are going for her 40th birthday (about 6 years from today).  We can do it…

We appreciate all of your support, thoughts, prayer. Our door will remain open.  Crystal wants to make sure you know it is ok to visit and call anytime.  Her only request – no flowers.

Crystal, Jason, Gaven, Aiden, Rylee

Crystal is more than my cousin. She is more like a sister and a best friend. She is 33 years old and she has a 2 ½ year old son named Aiden and a 8 month old daughter named Rylee.  She is married to Jason who has a 14 year old son named Gaven who Crystal treats as her own.

Crystal worked so hard to become a nurse. The RN program is a 2 year program. She completed that and took it one step further and continued her education to get her bachelors degree in nursing.  The ironic part of all this is that she is an oncology nurse.  When she told me she wanted to get into oncology, I thought she was certifiably insane.  I could NEVER deal with all that sadness on a day to day basis.  Oncology is a special calling and she got it.  I don’t wish cancer on anyone but I definitely feel that it is NOT FAIR that it would attack my cousin who dedicated her life to helping cancer patients.

How could this happen to my young cousin that has two babies depending on her? She asked me to create the Scrapbooks for her children so they would know who their mother was. She wants them to know what a great life she has, how much fun she is and of course how much she loves them. How do you let these children know what a wonderful person their mother is? You know how sometimes you wonder why life has taken you in one direction or another.  I think it was in God’s master plan that I would be called to do this one day so He led me to open a Scrapbook Store. I don’t think there is a better way to accomplish this task than through our passion, our hobby…scrapbooking.

We are in Colorado right now. We spent Thanksgiving with Crystal.  We are going through her pictures and organizing them so we can start making the scrapbooks.  I will be bringing these pictures home with me.  This is where we are pleading for your help.  I know you are all very busy with your day to day lives but if you can find it in your heart and find the time to make a layout for Crystal’s Scrapbook it would be a great big help for us.  We need all different types of layouts.  She will be scrapbooking her journals, emails that people sent to her and greeting cards. We would like these to be 2 page layouts with no set format.  She will also be scrapbooking lots and lots of photos.  We would like these to be 2 page layouts with several mats in different sizes but most for 4×6 photos.  We would also like an exposed spot for journaling (no hidden journaling please).

If you would like to know more about Crystal, see pictures and keep updated on her treatment program and her fight against cancer, her friends have started a blog for her. It is  We have created a link on our blog that will take you directly to Crystal’s blog.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this. Thank you for any layouts that you can contribute!!

Gilbert and I celebrated our 9th anniversary on Thursday November 6.  It seems like yesterday that we got married. I am so blessed to be married to such a wonderful man.  He knows me so well. He knows what I want before I know what I want.  I will tell you a funny story. He called me on his way home from work on Wednesday and said that he was going to stop somewhere for a snack because we wouldn’t be able to get dinner until after the store closed.  He asked if I wanted something. I said “No”.  He got to the store and had a hot dog and soda from Target.  I started whining like the punk that I am and said, “Why didn’t you bring me popcorn. You know I love Target popcorn”. He said, “You said you didn’t want anything”. I said, “Well you didn’t tell me you were going to Target. If you would have told me, I would have asked you to bring me some popcorn.  If you loved me you would have just brought me some popcorn because you know I love it”.  A few minutes later, he got up from his chair, went out to his car and brought in a bag of yummy Target popcorn.  He DOES know me and he DOES love me and he KNEW I would want popcorn.  He knows me so well that he knew I would whine. Knowing all this, he purposely left the popcorn in the car to play a joke on me. I played right into his joke.  Isn’t that the perfect man??

A few of us were talking about the musical Wicked. Gilbert knew that I have wanted to see Wicked since it came to L.A.  I thought I was the only one who had not seen it yet.  I really thought I missed the boat because It was supposed to end in October.  I didn’t know it had been extended until January.  Gilbert had already been looking in to it and thought it would be something fun for us to on our Anniversary.  But he wasn’t sure if he should buy the tickets or not.  I encouraged him to buy them.  So yesterday we got dressed up and cruised down to the Pantages Theatre in Hollywood.  We got there in plenty of time to grab a bit to eat. We walked down Hollywood Boulevard and found a Chinese restaurant called, Kung Pao Kitty.  The food was excellent and the service was superb.  We sat next to a couple of guys who had a table full of food and they assured us that EVERYTHING was good!!

After dinner, we walked back to the Pantages. Our seats were front row, center of the mezzanine. So we were in the front row, one level up…no heads in front of us.  We had THEEEE best seats in the house!! I have seen several musicals but Wicked was truly the best musical I have ever seen.  The singing is fabulous, It is funny, it is entertaining, it has a great story, it has everything!!  If you haven’t seen it, get your tickets NOW!!  You will not regret it!! Perfect dinner, perfect musical, perfect night with the perfect man!!

So what do you get the perfect man for his anniversary?  Gilbert is a pretty simple man, he doesn’t ask for much. What he does love is electronic gadgets.  He has them all.  He has been wanting a High Definition DVR.  He had also been researching Verizon’s FiOs to make the computer go at lightning speed.  We are so busy with the store that we do not have much time to watch TV.  We do manage to Tivo enough programs to keep us busy.  I think we are the only household that does not have cable or satellite TV.  Gilbert has always wanted it but I have refused to get it. I refused for two reasons: 1. We don’t have time to watch all that TV and 2. I am a total TV junkie, when we stay in a hotel that has Satellite TV I get sucked in.  I become a total couch potato. I can watch the Discovery Channel ALL DAY LONG!!! Shark Week, The Deadliest Catch, The Dirtiest Jobs and if you get a marathon day…ooohhhh that is the best!!!  Can you see where I am coming from.  Since I couldn’t think of anything to get him, I finally gave in.  I called Verizon and after speaking with Crystal, the customer service agent, for half an hour, I ordered an entire FiOs Bundle.  It includes your phone service, fiber optics for your computer so you go from 3 megs to 20 megs (I dont know what that means, but it sounds great), and TV Essentials that has 200 channels and an HD DVR.

I can’t believe that I finally gave in.  They are installing everything on Saturday, November 29, so if you dont see us after that, you know where you can find us… In front of our big screen TV!!!  Oh well, all that matters is that Gilbert was soooo happy!!  When Gilbert is happy, I am happy, so it was all worth it!!

Gilbert and I are in Utah for the Deck the Halls Quickutz Retreat. Some of you were at the store before I left when I went into panic mode because it was supposed to be SUPER COLD (high 30’s or low 40’s) in Park City.  Most of you know that I am a devout Flip Flop Girl.  Rain or Shine, I am in my flip flops. I ran out to try to find shoes that actually covered at least my toes.  NO LUCK!!  I hated every shoe that I put on my foot.  I called one of the girls from Quickutz and she told me that I should be fine.  She is born and raised in Utah and she wears her flip flops even in the snow.  Even though I was born and raised in California, I was totally convinced that I could brave the cold weather in my flip flops!!!  I usually run warm so I just brought a light sweater.  I didn’t even use it!!  It was a little chilly but it was crisp and actually quite refreshing.  You asked for me to give you an update.  I am happy to report that I wore my flip flops the entire time I was here in Utah and my toes stayed pretty warm and did very well!!!

Utah is absolutely beautiful and it is always fun to get away.  On the other hand it is so great to go home and sleep in your own bed.  It is 1 am in Utah and I am wide awake because I am so excited to get home.  I have so much on my mind. We have such a fun weekend planned, that is all I can think about.  On Friday we have the raffle for $100 Quickutz Shopping Spree and on Saturday we are bringing the Scrapbook Expo to you. We have 6 awesome make and takes and a huge Quickutz Sale!!  Did you hear that we have the Revolution for $39.99 too??

We learned so much out here that we are bursting to show you some new techniques to expand the use of all of your Quickutz tools!!  Stop by on both days if you can.  We would LOVE to see you!!!

Ok, I have to try to go to sleep.  Our plane leaves at 8 am. We have to be up at 5 and on the road by 5:30. We have a 40 minute drive to the airport and we have to gas up and return the rental car.

We will see you tomorrow!!
